Dave McKelleb dba Color Country Computing
I fell in love with computers & operating systems at Indiana/Purdue University early in the '70s, working on an IBM 1440 and System/370, and a CDC 6400, programming in Fortran and COBOL. Later I progrmmed and/or managed a Burroughs B4890 (COBOL), a Polymorphic CP/M, an IBM S/32 (RPGII), and DEC PDPs (RSTS/DIBOL). In 1984 I was employed by Dixie State College (in the Utah System of Higher Education) where I met DEC VAX/VMS, was bitten by the VMS bug, and never looked back (see the OpenVMS page for my evaluation of VMS). With the advent of PCs in the early '80s, I started Color Country Computing, providing hard-to-find supplies, peripherals and accessories (really expensive in those days - keyboards were $129, a “huge” 5 MB disk could cost hundreds).
I spent 14+ years at Dixie State and 8+ years at Utah Valley University (also in the USHE) designing, configuring, and managing OpenVMS clusters, software systems and applications, StorageWorks RAID arrays, OpenVMS Galaxy, and campuswide networks including internet connections, domain names and DNS servers, and network time protocol servers. I served on USHE IT committes and on national conference program committees. I presentated at FRSU, SISU, DECUS, SCT Summit, and USHE conferences on the leading edge projects and innovations at UVU and DSC.
In the early 2000s, USHE opted for Sun Solaris over OpenVMS. I designed and built the mainframe system of 19 Sun Sparc computers, databases, secure networks, and other security systems, for this university of 30,000 students, and got them up and running with precision. Then I retired, preferring not to be associated with an inferior operating system, dealing with the accompanying UVU managment restructuring, and with a health issue that has since been resolved. I now provide consulting as Color Country Computing when needed (well, not so much now), and build computers from scratch for family, friends, and especially for myself. And I tour this awesome Color Country in which I live, taking some photos, but mostly just enjoying the beauty and grandeur surounding me. Life is good!
