Lake Powell in Drought

The first tile opens a 1999 NASA satellite image of Lake Powell, with buttons for years 1999 through 2011 that replace the current image when selected.  Toggle 1999 and 2005 to show dramatically the effect of the drought on Lake Powell, and browse through them year-by-year to see the annual change in the lake's surface area.

The next six tiles open scenic photos with water-bleached “bathtub rings” that highlight the 137' decline in the lake's elevation:  Lone Rock, Glen Canyon Dam, and Face Canyon; and Cathedral Canyon, Kayaking Moki Wall, and Anasazi Canyon from the 2008 GCNRA photo contest.  The multi-photo image of the Bridge at Hite Crossing opens a page of drought and pre-drought photos comparing various levels of the lake at Hite Crossing.  Select a tile to view its photo.
